The numbers
Independent studies of UK SMEs consistently put the missed-call rate between 30% and 40% — higher for trades and anyone whose job means they can't pick up. The caller's response is well documented: about 69% won't leave a message, and 60–70% ring the next business on the list. Few call back later; the enquiry is simply gone.
A worked example
Say your business receives 300 calls a month and misses a third: 100 calls. Perhaps half were enquiries that could have become work: 50. If your average job is worth £250 and you'd normally win one in two, that's 25 jobs × £250 = £6,250 of revenue a month — £75,000 a year — before you count repeat business or referrals. Swap in your own numbers; even conservative assumptions tend to surprise owners.
- Inbound calls per month × missed share = missed calls
- × share that were genuine enquiries = lost enquiries
- × your win rate × average job value = lost revenue
Why call-backs don't recover it
By the time you ring back, the caller has often booked elsewhere, and the ones who haven't are harder to reach. Speed matters more than effort: enquiries answered immediately convert many times better than those answered an hour later.
What closes the gap
Answering every call, immediately, with something that can actually help — give a price, book a slot, arrange a call-back with the details already captured. That is the job an AI phone agent does, and it is why the return on one is usually measured in jobs rather than minutes saved.
Common questions
Where do these statistics come from?
Published UK SME call-handling research and telecoms-provider studies; see the sources cited on our homepage. Your own phone bill or provider portal will show your actual missed-call count.
Does this apply if I have voicemail?
Yes — most callers don't leave one. Voicemail protects you from nothing except the knowledge that the call happened.
